I have this image on my desk (thank you @gapingvoid !)
It reminds me that each day for every task I need to strive for 100 percent.
I don't always make it. I don't always remember.
I am like you human and full of mistakes.
I love that every new day holds the potential for me to give 100 percent.
This idea was introduced to me by Clayton Christensen, who coined the phrase, "It's easier to hold your principles 100 percent of the time than it is to hold them 98 percent of the time.”
If we reflect we see this principle in play all the time - even in the movie and literature.
Consider a movie like "End Game." The main characters are in a slump (understandably) after half the world disappeared. Then comes a moment when they realize there is possibly a way to bring everyone back. They move from 98 percent to 100 percent (again) to make it happen. They are committed no matter the outcome. And as the final battle continues Tony Stark asks Dr. Strange what is the outcome - to which he responds, "If I told you it wouldn't happen."
Is that the same for us?
Too often we worry about the end of the process or the outcome without the commitment to see it through because we "know" the outcome.
Why try if it isn't going to work?
Why commit to the process if it is probably doomed to failure?
Why not leave 2 percent wiggle room so I have an excuse for not meeting my goal?
Both Micheal Jordan and Seth Godin live by a commitment that once they make a decision to do something it is done - and they move on. 100 percent committed to the decision they no longer use any of their potential decision-making energy to revisit the decision. It is done, decision made - 100 percent committed to the outcome/choice.
Can you say you do this in your life?
Do you make this commitment as you raise your children? As you lead your team? When you set a diet goal or workout goal?
Do you make the decision and move forward, living it out or do you leave 2 percent room to wiggle - just in case?
I think one clear indicator is your team. Are they committed? Do they feel motivated? DO you inspire them because you are 100 percent?
There is a passion and motivation that comes with 100 percent. You see yourself (your team sees you and then sees themselves) meeting your 100 percent goal and you are motivated. You gain not only satisfaction when you hold to your commitment but you also develop more self-confidence the next time a challenge comes.
And so does your team.
Your team sees your commitment. They feel your passion and resolve. And they are strengthened by it. Their commitment to 100 percent is strengthened too.
And the motivation to move forward in times of challenge or difficulty - resolve to persevere - is fueled in your team too.
They need to see you be committed 100 percent. Anything less is hard.
What decision, goal or principle do you need to move from 98 percent to 100 percent?
